Hey y’all! I’m back in black! (See what I did there?)

I decided to make a new dress out of corduroy. I had two yards of this fabric from Melanated Fabrics. I only bought 2 yards. And I bought that much because I had never worked with corduroy before and I figured that if I spent money on 2 yards and the project went sour, then I wouldn’t be out of a ton of money. That makes sense until you have to make something out of ONLY two yards.

My options were limited to a skirt, dress or shorts. I was leaning toward a skirt until I saw this pattern, McCall’s 7968. I liked that it had a short sleeve puffy version which I knew would fit into my yardage.

I picked up this pattern, and my instinct were correct. I had just enough to make view A.

This dress is pretty straight forward. There’s a facing, invisible zipper and front and back darts which add a nice shape to the dress.

My only negative take away was that the dress was TOO long. It’s supposed to sit just above the knee. I want to say I cut 2-4 inches off the hem and then hemmed it 2 inches. I know I’m short but damn! Lol.

I know I shared this on IG, but I don’t mind sharing it here too. I want to give some tips on working with corduroy.

  • Identify the nap, and the direction that it’s going in. It’s all in the touch. Then cut all your fabric in one direction.
  • Press your fabric with a cloth between the cords and the iron. Or you can iron it face down.
  • The grooves in the corduroy fabric have a few names: cords, wales and ribs. All of these mean the same thing.

Until next time xo ….

Girl this is my world every time I make a pattern. I always end up hemming it a ridiculous amount or just going for a long look. No love for the short ladies, lol.
