Raise your hand if you find style inspo from your favorite celebs? I know at times, I do!
The Duchess of Sussex A.K.A Meghan Markle always has really great looks. But her favorite (I’m only guessing here) is the “coatigan.” I mean, I pinned about 4 or 5 different looks on Pinterest of her wearing the same silhouette. So am I crazy, or she really likes this style?
Her’s retails for at least $200 and up! Welp, mine only cost me $14 and that was just for the pattern!
I used Butterick 6244 (out of print at the time of purchase) and bought it online for a steep $13.97. According to the finished garment measurements I should have used the size 20. As fate would have it, I bought the “wrong” size group online and my pattern only went to size 16. I didn’t realize my mistake until I taped my tiled pattern together. Oops!
So… I had a hunch, that the coat may still work. I measured the flat paper pattern and realized that it would fit like a glove if I cut out the size 16. After I cut out my fabric and sewed it together (only took about an hour), I realized that a size 20 would’ve drowned my frame. And my fabric? It was gifted to me by Joe’s grandmother. It’s a light weight tan and navy checkered wool. It worked perfectly for this pattern due to the weight and the fact that the check can be seen on both sides.
I think I realize why Meghan likes this coatigan so much. It’s flattering, comfortable and you can honestly wear anything underneath and it elevates any look.
I’ll definitely be adding this to my work wardrobe and wearing this next Fall as well.
