Happy Fall, y’all! Today is the first day of Autumn and, to my surprise it is a little chilly out. Living in the south has conditioned me to know and understand that we could be experiencing Summer temps well into October, but the last few days have felt different.
There is a slight crisp in the air and even though I still have Summer outfits that I need to make (and believe me, I’ll get to those) I’m flexing my Fall muscles one good time in my button down dress!
The moment of truth. I honestly thought I made a mistake by using this fabric and this pattern together. I love the print and I love the pattern separately but I didn’t know if I liked it together until I added the last finishing touches. The love for this outfit was slow going.
The fabric is from Mood. It’s a cotton sateen and it’s quite heavy but I like the volume that it creates. I absolutely love this print too. If you look closely you can see faces. It’s abstract which makes it less obvious but still striking.
The pattern is Mimi G 9114 and it’s the duster/dress, view A. I’ve seen it a few ways, as a solid button down and also with a sheer fabric and I don’t think you can go wrong either way.
I made an adjustment for my height. I trimmed off 3 inches of the bottom panel to make it floor length and gave it a narrow hem.
This pattern was the first button down pattern that I’ve ever made that didn’t include a back yoke or separate pattern pieces for the collar stand. It doesn’t demote the pattern, but it’s an interesting detail and could make it less intimidating for new sewists.
I thought all the gathering would drive me crazy, but I was actually okay. If you work in moderation it’s not terrible.
This was a quick sew that was only dragged on by the fact that I wasn’t initially in love with my concept. But now, seeing the full outcome, I think it’s absolutely beautiful!
